Oglethorpe Point Elementary named a Georgia School

For the second consecutive year, an elementary school in the Glynn County School System has been named a Georgia School of Excellence by the Georgia Department of Education.

State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge cited Oglethorpe Point Elementary School on St. Simons Island as one of 26 schools in the state to be named a 2011 Georgia School of Excellence in Student Achievement in the annual program that honors the state’s highest performing schools. Oglethorpe Point received the honor for being in the top 10 percent of schools in Georgia as measured by assessments in reading and mathematics.

“It is a tremendous honor for our staff, students and parents to be recognized for all of their hard work,” said Oglethorpe Point Principal Susie Arnold.

In 2011, 97 percent of third-graders and 100 percent of fourth- and fifth-graders at Oglethorpe Point passed the state’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in reading. In mathematics, 97 percent of third-graders, 99 percent of fourth-graders and 100 percent of fifth-graders passed the CRCT.

Georgia Schools of Excellence are honored in two categories – Top 10 Percent and Greatest Gains. Schools in the Greatest Gains category demonstrate the greatest continuous improvements over the past three years as measured by assessments in reading and mathematics.

In his announcement of the recognition, State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge said that schools that earn this recognition “are showing that excellence can be achieved when they are focused on providing world-class education for their students.”

In 2010, St. Simons Elementary School was named a Georgia School of Excellence in the Greatest Gains category. The school also earned the honor in 2004, 1996 and 1990.
