While in coastal Georgia to speak at a conference on St. Simons Island, Georgia’s First Lady Sandra Deal and State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge carved time out of their schedule to visit Brunswick High School for a first-hand look at public education during a typical school day. Student greeters Willie Bolden, Emily Day and Lauren Stokes welcomed the pair at the school’s front door before leading a tour that visited several classrooms.
Slade Turner (left) had an opportunity to break from teaching to describe to Superintendent Barge (center) and First Lady Deal what students were learning that morning in his U.S. History class. The group also visited Steve Kipp’s physical science class, Pam Smith’s life skills class and Shonta Butts' math class before ending the tour in the school’s media center, where they enjoyed refreshments and were presented with BHS Pirates shirts and hats. BHS Principal Terry Graff and district Operations Director Al Boudreau showed Barge and Deal plans for the new Brunswick High School and invited the pair back for the school’s grand opening in fall 2013.
The visit to Brunswick High School was part of an initiative by Deal and Barge to visit elementary, middle and high schools in all regions of the state. The visits, Barge said, enable him to get out of Atlanta to see how state rules and policies affect schools at the local level. "This school reminds me of my high school," said Barge, who grew up in Cobb County and attended Campbell High School in Smyrna, Ga.
