GICA student places first at state competition

Johnny Simmons (left), a senior on the Golden Isles Career Academy SkillsUSA team, placed first in the state in precision machining at the Georgia SkillsUSA Leadership Conference and State Convention held recently at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.  SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that serves students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including architecture, construction, communication, transportation, cosmetology and public safety.

With his first-place finish at the state competition, Simmons will advance to the National SkillsUSA Competition June 20-24 in Kansas City. He was honored at the April Glynn County Board of Education meeting and is pictured with Glynn County Schools Superintendent Howard Mann.

Other Career Academy SkillsUSA team members who competed at the state event were Chris Brown (second place in collision repair), Travis Thompson (second place in automotive refinishing), Lila Joiner and Frederick Robinson (second place in audio and radio production), Jenny Chong and Ian Farrelly (second place in 3D visualization and computer animation), Christopher Parshley (competed in automotive brakes), Cheyenne Hutcheson (competed in advertising design), Ryan Blount and Brenda Smith-Lezama (competed in television/video production), Carter Smith (competed in welding), and Jakob Stephens (competed in applied technical math).
